  Below are some suggested itineraries for touring the major college campuses in Southern California during April Spring Break. It assumes the most important campuses to see are UCSB, UCLA, USC, and UCSD, with UCI and Cal Poly SLO as options. The itineraries are based on when these campuses are open for guided tours. Self-guided tours of other nearby campuses can be taken at other times. (Note: this itinerary was originally created for spring 2001. Check the campus websites for the latest tour times.)

  Slow way south:

This tour takes advantage of the fact that UCSD has Saturday tours. It allows including Cal Poly SLO. The USC and UCLA tours can be swapped, in order to take the "Meet USC" tour offered only on Wednesday. The drive back from San Diego is a long drive back to the Bay Area.
  • Monday: San Luis Obispo, visit Cal Poly, take 2:10 tour, head for Santa Barbara, stay overnight
  • Tuesday: UCSB 11 am, see video, 12 pm, take campus tour, self-tour Westmont or CSUN, head for LA, stay overnight.
  • Wednesday: UCLA 10:15 am campus tour, 12:30 housing tour, self-tour Pepperdine, stay in LA
  • Thursday: USC, 11 am campus tour, self-tour CSULA, head for Irvine, stay overnight
  • Friday: UCI, 12 pm campus tour, self tour of Cal State Fullerton, head for San Diego, stay overnight
  • Saturday: 11 am tour, self-tour of CSUSD, stay in San Diego
  • Sunday: head home

  Slow way north:

This puts the long drive to San Diego at the start of the trip. It can be done on Saturday to spend more time touring San Diego or breaking up the drive into 2 pieces. The trip home from UCSB to San Jose is about 4 1/2 to 5 hours.
  • Sunday head for San Diego, stay overnight
  • Monday: UCSD, 11 am tour, head for Irvine, stay overnight
  • Tuesday: UCI 12 pm campus tour, head for LA, stay overnight
  • Wednesday: USC, 9 am meet USC program, stay in LA overnight
  • Thursday: UCLA, 10:15 campus tour, head for Santa Barbara, stay overnight
  • Friday: UCSB 11 am, see video, 12 pm, take campus tour, see Spring Insight open house, stay in Santa Barbara overnight
  • Saturday: see Poly Royal at Cal Poly.

  Slow south and north:

These alternatives break up the trip into shorter segments to reduce the long drives. The first includes Cal Poly. The second includes UCI.

  • Monday: Drive to Cal Poly, stay in LA
  • Tuesday: UCLA, stay in LA
  • Wednesday: USC, stay in SD
  • Thursday: UCSD, stay in SB
  • Friday: UCSB, stay in SB
  • Saturday: head home
Alternative 2:
  • Sunday: drive to SB, stay in SB
  • Monday: UCSB, stay in LA
  • Tuesday: UCLA, stay in LA
  • Wednesday: UCI, stay in SD
  • Thursday: UCSD, stay in LA
  • Friday: USC, stay in LA
  • Saturday: see Poly Royal at Cal Poly, head home
Alternative 3:
  • Sunday, drive down to LA, stay in LA
  • Monday, tour UCLA, stay in Orange County
  • Tuesday, tour UCI stay in SD
  • Wednesday, tour UCSD, stay in LA
  • Thursday, tour USC, stay in SB
  • Friday, tour UCSB, stay in SB
  • Saturday, see Poly Royal at Cal Poly, head home
